Coping with stress and overwhelm

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed with your business?

September is a funny time of year isn’t it? You may have been working a little less over the last couple of months because you were on holiday, clients needed less from you or you had limited childcare. Or perhaps all three?!

Whatever the reason I find that it can sometimes take a little while to get back into full work mode or perhaps you have been feeling stretched, unfocussed, overwhelmed or lost your mojo?

Stress is an everyday occurrence. We experience stress when we feel threated and when we believe that we don’t have the resources to deal with the situation. The signs of stress can be physical, a change in feelings and behaving differently. The root cause of stress can be made up of four main sources but can be one main issue or a culmination of issues.  A very interesting subject around stress is cause and effect. Cause and effect is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction. As an example, without an alarm you would probably oversleep so the alarm has an effect of you waking up at a certain time. Feelings of stress are normally triggered by things happening in life such as being under a lot of pressure, facing big changes, not having control or having responsibility that is overwhelming. There may be one big thing that is stressful, but it can also be lots of small issues that build up over time. Stress can be closely linked to mental health if it is a struggle to manage feelings.

So if you are feeling stressed, here are some ideas that have helped me and also my clients that may help you manage your stress and also thrive over the last few months of the year:

  • Systems/process/strategy - focus on some simple processes and strategies to put in place. They don’t need to be time consuming and difficult; all systems should help you to work more efficiently.
  • Focused time - how often do you spend working on your business? Planning and focusing your time can really help with clarity and goals. Also focus on those priorities, here is a useful blog
  • Ask for help – have trusted business buddies, mentor, Coach (!) or networking friends who can all support you, if you ask for it!
  • Spend less time on your own – a shameless plug for my co-working club J  How different does it feel when you get out to an energising event, coffee shop or co-working space?
