Reflection – not just for the end of the year!

“The type of person you are is usually reflected in your business. To improve your business, first improve yourself.”
― Idowu Koyenikan

What is reflection and why is it important?

The end of the year is a great time to reflect.  However, I’ll give you a little secret - I reflect every day. It is one of my daily habits with the H3 programme and even though I have now completed the 60 day programme, this is one amazing habit that I will continue doing every day. In fact, all the 7 fundamentals are now firmly in my day to day habits. I encourage all my clients to reflect, and all my workshops, strategy sessions and coaching programmes start with a check in or I ask two simple questions:

What is working well and what is not working? Why?

Reflection is so powerful and the science behind it shows that people who do have the ability to self-reflect have advantages in many areas of life. It is a tool for developing our skills, confidence and motivation. Another benefit is that we learn.  By reflecting we can start to see what is helping or hindering our performance and sometimes it is just very small tweaks to see some great change. We can sometimes think that a situation is all negative.  However, after allowing yourself some reflection time, we can often see a positive, even if it is just one encouraging take away.

Reflect on what? I hear you ask.  Things to include are:

  • You, self-awareness is a key area of success
  • A review of what you want, your hopes and goals
  • What have you achieved in the day
  • What you were grateful for
  • What you didn’t get done that you intended to

Some ideas about how to reflect:

  • Get out the big paper and coloured pens and have a self-reflection session, it is fun and free!
  • Have a session with a friend, colleague or Business Coach (shameless plug) for some peer reflection.
  • Have a gratitude, affirmation or reflection diary next to your bed, this is a great tool for downloading.

How do you reflect and how does it help you? I would love to hear from you. Here is a fantastic article by Life Hack all about reflection and a step by step guide on how to reflect:

Not sure where to start on your reflection, vision and goals? I have limited spaces on my next workshop on the 22nd of January:
